S stands for speed - The letter S in 3GS stands for the fact that the phone is much faster, but it is the camera that is the most prominent of all the updates for the latest version of the iPhone.

iPhone 3GS Camera
Since the iPhone has no physical button to focus when taking photos with the iPhone 3GS, Apple has solved the auto focus on a rather special way. Usually, one holds the camera button halfway down to focus in the middle of the picture. On the iPhone when the camera application is started it starts to focus a few times in the middle of the picture. When it is finished it is then just press the button on the screen. Beyond that you can now tap the screen where you want to focus. Great Stuff. In the case of still images you notice a clear difference now that the camera is equipped with autofocus. You’ll see especially good works with close-ups.
Video is another of the significant updates to the new iPhone 3GS. Now, you can record video and it’s easily done through a small gear button in the camera application. In one mode, it will be still images and in the other video. The resolution is clearly respectable 640 by 480 pixels, which is in line with Nokia’s better phones and they are among the best in the market at playing the video.
An odd result of the phone’s design is that the most natural way to shoot your video clips is with the phone in portrait mode. That is when it is easiest to keep your phone firmly in one hand and that is when it is easiest to access buttons to control recording, keep a grip on the phone with your hand and then you will be to start and stop recording with your thumb. One drawback with this though is that, many online video sites including Youtube, will show big black edges on your movies. Not even Apple’s own program iMovie handles the films yet, so the conclusion is therefore that you should shoot in landscape mode if you want to upload them anywhere later.
iPhone Compass
The built-in compass inside the iPhone 3GS is also integrated with Google Maps. by clicking in the map once to be positioned and then again in the same place activates the compass. A small indicator shows which way you are facing and spins to move the map to match the direction you are facing as you move. This feature is not completely one hundred percent though and it happens to show a bit wrong, but in all cases in nine out of ten times it shows correctly.

iPhone 3GS – Speed
Among the major changes under the skin on the new iPhone is the processor and even if Apple does not like to talk about the raw technical specifications such as working memory and processing power, so they say that the phone is twice as fast as the old one and it seems consistent. This is evident, for example, when you start your phone. It shows up when you open the message function, image viewer or settings. Throughout, it feels like the new iPhone is about twice as fast as the old one and it shows when the new program should be opened and loaded. But it is also seen clearly in the browser. When tapping around a larger website you can do so without delay. Customers upgrading from an older iPhone will see the hourglass icon a lot less often!
iPhone 3GS Review – Overall
Generally, with the simple features, Apple has succeeded quite well, although the focus is on the more advanced features that Web browsers and music. You can find your way quickly and easily in your address book. On the other hand there is no quantum leap in innovation that Apple previously made itself known. Iphone was a big step, but the Iphone 3GS is more about fine tuning that makes the iPhone even more user friendly. Not cheap but a fantastic piece of kit all round.
