Despite their small size, the sheer volume of mobile phones that are produced to satisfy worldwide demand is causing environmental concern. Apart from recycling your mobile phone, should you also be trying to limit the ecological impact of your new mobile phone?.

Sony Ericsson has been working on eco-mobiles for a long time, and recently launched two new models in its Green Heart Series: Elm and Hazel. The Phones are made of recycled plastic and has no harmful chemicals, according to Sony Ericsson. You won’t have to sacrifice style if you buy a Sony Ericsson Elm or Hazel though – they are also feature-packed with both GPS and Wifi. In addition, the phone include 5-megapixel camera with face recognition.

Difference between Sony Ericsson Elm & Hazel?

In terms of features Elm and Hazel are almost identical. In style Hazel is a slide-phone sold in both red and black, while Elm is a more traditional style phone in black and metal. Thanks to the retractable shape Hazel has also a larger display (2.6 inches high instead of the Elms 2.2-inch screen).
Both The Elm & The Hazel are shipped with e-manuals and minimised packaging which makes a lot of sense to us.

GPS Navigation

GPS is based on the built-in GPS program Wisepilot, including step-by-step navigation. The camera phone also geotags images, so that the location the pictures were taken is shown for example in a photo blog.

Sony Ericsson are well known for integrating great cameras and these mobiles come with a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. For ease of use and focus, there is support for face recognition. There is also support for direct uploading captured images, for example, Facebook or Flickr.

Music, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube

The Music players in these Green Heart phones has the same functionality as Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones, that is a complete music player that supports TrackID (to figure out what song is playing on the radio) and SenseMe (which creates playlists based on what mood you want the songs to match).

SMS messages are displayed in balloon-like conversations, like a chat. Both phones also have built applications on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. The Hazel and Elm also feature a Walk Mate eco application, a green calculator and a low power consumption charger (called EP300 GreenHeart).
