(Scroll down for the best UK deals on Motorola Atrix contracts on T-Mobile, Orange and more)
The Atrix is Motorola’s stab at competing with the latest high-end handsets from Apple, HTC and BlackBerry. This is evident by the contract prices. £20 per month will just about squeeze you 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data. This places the Motorola Atrix right in line with the HTC Desire S and HD. Motorola market this phone as the most powerful handset in the world, so how does the Atrix stack up?
Android 2.2 Froyo is a good start, giving the Atrix the flexibility and seamless interaction seen first on the original HTC Desire. Motoblur is also included – basically Motorola’s version of HTC Sense, incorporating practically everyone and everything in one place in a fully customisable, social media focused, widget happy screen. Similarly to HTC Sense, Motoblur backs everything up online via Motorola’s own servers. Dropping your £400 Atrix down the toilet means you won’t have to endure the embarrassment of having to tell your friends all about it whilst you attempt to collate their contact details, again.
The power plant of the Atrix is an impressive 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor. With a name like that it needs to be fast, and guess what? It is fast. Practically a PC, the Atrix combines this super-fast processing power with 1GB of RAM making multi-tasking effortless. Now for the coolest part – fingerprint recognition! Away with old fashioned swipes and PIN numbers, the Atrix will only let you in once the on-board smart sensor recognises your fingerprint. More Matrix than Atrix, this will certainly cause some oohs and ahhs amongst Apple and HTC fans.
Web browsing via Firefox makes surfing on the Atrix a PC-esque experience which is no bad thing. Flash support gives the Atrix a one-up on the iPhone 4. Text-to-speech technology was one of the most reliable we’ve seen and works with everything from phone calls to text messaging and social media updates. Essentially wherever you can enter text, you can speak it instead.
With all this power you’d expect the Atrix to stutter to a halt after a few hours of use, however we found it to be surprisingly long lasting. Moderate use will give you at least 2 days worth of juice. That’s not only impressive for such a powerful device, it’s considerably better than the iPhone 4.
