The iPhone 4 is getting all the attention these days, but there are still great deals available on the iPhone 3GS which is still fairly new. In a battle of the phones we are giving you the lowdown on the iPhone 4 versus the iPhone 3GS
– Looks / Design –
There is no doubt that the iphone 4 is a major step in the evolution of the iPhone. It is the fourth model of the iPhone, but despite the name is not 4G as one might think. However, it can handle high-speed 3G and can also recharge quickly – much faster than 3GS. A built-in gyro makes it possible to get a great gaming experience – better than ever before with more mobility. FaceTime is a function exclusive to iphone 4 and it means that you can make video calls, but only with another iPhone 4 user and only when both of you have your phone connected to a fast wireless network (WLAN).
The iPhone 3Gs made a grand entrance about a year ago with the release of functions as a compass and a better camera than previous models of the iPhone. Like the iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs operating system can take advantage of the new multitasking feature which means that you can listen to Spotify without music being interrupted while e.g. writing an SMS. Looking at the range of applications to the phone available for iPhone 3Gs virtually everything that the iPhone can is covered. The only difference is the built-in gyro in the iPhone 4, meaning there ate a few games that one will not be able to play a full part of with 3GS model. No biggie for most people.
iPhone 4 versus iPhone 3 – Deals
This is a rapidly changing market, for the best deals look at the networks direct. Three, Orange, Vodafone and O2. In terms of retailers, Carphone Warehouse always have some good deals and stock as do mobiles.co.uk .
– Camera –
The camera in the iPhone 4 is five megapixels, but when we tested it, it is not flattering still images on performance. It does takes better pictures than 3GS, but that is not by far. The front of a camera (0.3 megapixels) is for self-portraits and video calls. Otherwise, the video recording in HD is sharp, and the big news is that it allows you to edit movies directly on your phone.
The biggest difference when it comes to video and still image capability on the iPhone 3GS compared to the iPhone 4 is that the resolution (ie the size of picture / movie that can be displayed without loss of quality) is about half the iPhone 4. A new feature of iPhone 3Gs was (and still is!) that the camera is ready for the new Augmented Reality technology ( combining GPS data with images and adding text etc to better understand it / make it more useful) and there are some good apps that take advantage of this.
– Screen –
The iphone 4 features what is probably the best screen built into a mobile phone. Trust us we have used and reviewed thousands of phones at Phone Shop. We’ve been online since 1999!. It is incredibly sharp and you will notice it when using it. The precision of the touch screen when you press is also great. In order to exploit the sharp screen to it’s fullest it is necessary for the apps to be configured for iPhone 4, that is not yet the case for a lot of apps.
The screen of the iPhone 3GS is good compared to most other mobile screens and big and smart enough to make film and web browsing enjoyable. Compared with the iPhone four, however, there is not much to set against it must be recognized. The precision when you press your finger on the screen to control is superior, which is where Apple gets top marks – both the 3GS iPhone and the new iPhone four are best of breed.
– Apps / Media –
Apple is understandably cautious about changing a winning concept, the media functions with music, video and images is relatively untouched. It works like the Iphone made previously and the biggest difference we experienced in our reviews is that with the iPhone 4, the screen makes everything a bit sharper.
iTunes is at the heart of the media features for all iPhone models and if you have not used the iPhone before it becomes a novelty. All music, movies, images etc are moved between iPhone and iTunes. If you like the program, you’ll enjoy it fine with the media features of iPhone 3Gs. It just works.
Is the iPhone 4 better than the iPhone 3GS ?
In a word – yes ! the advances in the camera count for a lot and although this wasn’t exactly a quantum leap. The iPhone 3GS is still a great phone and will serve most people well but expect most future development to be on new features for the iPhone 4.
